Phillip K Smith III, like Doug Aitken uses mirrors to amplify the beauty of the desert landscape. His work serves as an optical illusion, which truly encapsulates the tonal range of color featured throughout the desert setting. Using 300 rectangular blocks of reflective mirrors angled at 10 degrees, he manages to capture the expansive panorama of the desert from countless angles. These mirrors combine views of east & west, up & down, as well as forward and backward. These types of angles would be impossible to fathom without such reflective surfaces. I would imagine the shifting of light throughout the day drastically influences the mood of the piece.
